Our circle
Mighty Creek is a father–son community within the Broken Arrow Expedition of YMCA Adventure Guides. Like the winding creek represented in our logo, we believe the greatest moments are found not in taking the shortest path, but in embracing the journey along the way.
Our circle meetings become lifelong friendships. Our campouts become legendary stories retold for years. Every adventure creates opportunities for fathers and sons to grow together, discover new strengths, and build memories that last a lifetime.
Together, the Mighty Creek is a force shaped by connection, character, and perseverance—just like the relentless power of water carving its path through the landscape. Side-by-side, fathers and sons are creating a legacy that will flow through generations.
Location
Based in Southern Orange County, Mighty Creek brings together families from across the region, including Ladera Ranch, Rancho Santa Margarita, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo, Rancho Mission Viejo, and neighboring communities.
Our Circle meetings are typically held at local parks, beaches, or members' homes, making it easy for families to connect close to home.
Campouts and special events take place at campgrounds, event venues, and other outdoor destinations throughout Orange County and beyond. While many of our campouts are within an hour's drive, we also plan adventures farther from home, giving families the opportunity to explore a wide variety of exciting destinations together.
What we do
- Monthly circle meetings hosted by rotating dads
- Seasonal campouts and expeditions with the wider Broken Arrow group
- Traditions passed down — chants, skits, and a few running jokes only the circle understands
- A graduation send-off for sons moving on to become Islanders
Circle meetings are where curiosity turns into confidence. Throughout the year, dads and sons come together to learn the skills and lessons that matter most—from beach safety and first aid to outdoor skills, teamwork, and leadership. These lessons are taught hands-on, giving the boys the opportunity to learn by doing, exploring, and working alongside their dads and fellow circle members.
As they grow, the boys have opportunities to earn pins, rockers, and medals that recognize their effort, growth, and willingness to take on new challenges. Whether it’s hiking a trail with dad, preparing a meal for mom, or sharing a presentation with the circle, each experience builds confidence, responsibility, and character while creating memories that last a lifetime.
Mixed Ages
Our circle brings together boys from ages 5 to 13, creating a unique environment where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and lead. The older boys naturally step into leadership roles, mentoring the younger boys through hands-on adventures, exploration, and shared experiences at every campout and event.
In return, the younger boys remind the older ones to embrace curiosity, imagination, and the simple joy of being a kid. Together, they create a cycle of learning that benefits everyone.
As the older boys lead by example, they model our core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility, helping to shape the next generation of leaders within our circle.
New Experiences
Every campout and event is a new adventure for our circle. Whether it's exploring an unfamiliar destination, embracing a creative new theme, or simply experiencing the outdoors during a different season, each gathering offers fresh opportunities to learn, discover, and grow.
Through these shared experiences, our boys build resilience, independence, teamwork, and perseverance. They learn to overcome challenges, support one another, and step outside their comfort zones—all while creating lifelong memories alongside their dads and fellow circle members.
Time to Shine
Throughout campouts, circle meetings, ceremonies, and special events, every boy is given the opportunity to discover his own strengths and shine. Some naturally step into the spotlight, while others do so when the time feels right or with a little encouragement from their dads and fellow circle members.
Along the way, they develop the confidence to speak up, make eye contact, collaborate with others, and contribute as part of a team. These experiences help build self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership—qualities that will serve them throughout their lives.
As they learn to work together and support one another, they become a capable, confident group, all while creating unforgettable memories and sharing meaningful adventures side-by-side with their dads.
